Society Awards

EMBS is now accepting nominations for the 2012 EMBS Awards.  Please see the announcement for individual awards or the announcement for chapter awards for more information.  The deadline is February 10, 2012 for individual awards and March 15, 2012 for chapter awards.  

EMBS sponsors twelve (12) Awards of member recognition for technical and professional excellence, service to the society, local activities, publications and student papers. Nominations for these awards are accepted annually in February, Award Recipients are announced in May and the awards are presented at the Society’s Annual International Conference.  Nominations and Selection are made according to the EMBS Awards Nomination and Selection Procedure

The following Awards are presented on an annual basis:

Early Career Achievement Award
(Honorarium $1,000 USD/Travel Reimbursement up to $1,500 USD)
For significant contributions to the field of biomedical engineering as evidenced by innovative research design, product development, patents and/or publications made by an individual who is within 10 years of completing their highest degree at the time of the nomination and is a current member of EMBS.

Academic Career Achievement Award
(Honorarium $2,500 USD/Travel Reimbursement up to $1,500 USD)
For outstanding contribution and achievement in the field of biomedical engineering to an educator, researcher, developer or administrator with a distinguished career of 20 years or more in the field of biomedical engineering. Accomplishments may be technological or theoretical and need not have preceded the award date by any specific period of time. The individual must be a current member of EMBS.

Professional Career Achievement Award
(Honorarium $2,500 USD/Travel Reimbursement up to $1,500 USD)
For outstanding contribution advancing biomedical engineering and its professional practices as a practicing biomedical engineer working in industry, government or other applied areas related to biomedical engineering. Accomplishments include, but are not limited to, technological advances, improvements in processes, or development of new products or procedures, and need not have preceded the award date by any specified period of time. The individual must be a current member of EMBS.

Service Award
(Honorarium $1,000 USD/Travel Reimbursement up to $1,500 USD)
For outstanding service and contributions to the Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society. Accomplishments should be related to direct Society service, need not have preceded the award date by any specific period of time and the individual must be a current member of EMBS.

Outstanding Performance Award: Student Chapter or Club
(Honorarium $500 USD/Travel Reimbursement up to $1,000 USD)
For outstanding performance in promoting student interest and involvement in Biomedical Engineering during the previous calendar year. A single EMBS Student Branch Chapter or Club will be selected based on activities demonstrating initiative, innovation, and creativity; areas of progress and improvement; significant impact in biomedical engineering education; and contributions to the profession.

Best New Student Chapter or Club Award
(Honorarium $300 USD/Travel Reimbursement up to $1,000 USD)
For outstanding activities performed by a new EMBS Student Club or Chapter within the first 12 months of formation. A single EMBS Student Branch Chapter or Club will be selected based on activities demonstrating initiative, innovation, and creativity; areas of progress and improvement; significant impact in biomedical engineering education; and contributions to the profession.

Outstanding Chapter Award
(Honorarium $1,000 USD/Travel Reimbursement up to $1,000 USD)
For achievement in member development and delivering services to members of an EMBS Chapter during the previous calendar year. A single EMBS Chapter will be selected based on activities, community outreach and promotion of EMBS.

Best New Chapter Award
(Honorarium $500 USD/Travel Reimbursement up to $1,000 USD)
For outstanding activities performed by a new EMBS Chapter within the first 12 months of Chapter formation. A single EMBS Chapter will be selected based on activities, community outreach and promotion of EMBS.

EMBS Student Paper Competition
EMBS sponsors a Student Paper Competition at its Annual Conference, EMBC. Top scoring papers from Geographic and Open Finalists are selected for onsite competition during special sessions at EMBC. Individuals participating in the Competition must be EMBS Student Members.

Best Paper Award - Publications

Technical Awards
(Honorarium $500 USD/Travel Reimbursement up to $1,500 USD for each of the five awardees)
EMBS has established the Technical Awards to recognize an individual(s) for outstanding achievement, contribution(s) and/or innovation in a technical area of biomedical engineering. This achievement can be demonstrated by the advancement of technology through a publication and/or the development of a product, device or service.

The areas of technology eligible for recognition by this award include (but are not limited to) bio-signal processing, biomedical image and image processing, bio-instrumentation, bio-sensors, bio-micro/nano technologies, bioinformatics, computational biology and systems biology, cardiovascular and respiratory systems engineering, neural and rehabilitation engineering, cellular and tissue engineering, bio-materials, bio-robotics, biomechanics, therapeutic and diagnostic systems, medical device design and development, healthcare information systems, telemedicine and emerging technologies in biomedicine. Each year up to five awardees will be selected based on nominations.

William J. Morlock Award
(Honorarium $3,000 USD/Travel Reimbursement up to $2,000 USD)
Every two years, EMBS presents the William J. Morlock Award to give recognition to a qualified person with an original contribution involving important applications of electronics techniques and concepts to the solution of biomedical problems.
